The Final Word

Introduction

Welcome to this third version of freefootstories. Formely known as 'The Footstories Specialist' then 'Foottales', freefootstories reborns after several months of thinking and tweaking.

If you expect to be an active contributor, I strongly suggest you to go through this entire documentation. You will learn about the new features of freefootstories and how to improve the content.

Why freefootstories?

You may be wondering why making a site dedicated to stories while many bulletin boards already exist. What is the added value of freefootstories? This is a legitimate question and the anwser is somehow personal.

Bulletin boards are a generic tool to exchange and share. While they are useful in some situations, they do not fit well in the new thinking of freefootstories.
Here are the main disadvantages that are, according to me, an obstacle to a user friendly foot stories sharing website:

  • you need to log in to post a story.
  • you may need to log in to read stories.
  • you need to sort comments from stories.
  • you need to go through lenghty discussions to read multi-part stories.
Moreover, you need to add the disadvantages of the administration of these boards:
  • stories may be lost when an upgrade is performed on the bulletin software: administrators do not care about the stories as it is easier to start from scratch.
  • stories may only be readable by privileged or paying members.
  • lost of interest by the administrators. Stories are discarded when the website dies.

The Aim of freefootstories

The mission of freefootstories is to promote the sharing of foot stories that contain crushing, trampling and foot smelling in a user friendly environment. Here are the features of this environment:
  • loginless reading: no login is needed to read stories.
  • loginless modifications: no login is needed to submit, to edit or to delete stories.
  • no restricted access: you do not need any privilege or to pay to access stories.
  • real-time publishing: your stories are published in real-time with no prior moderation.
  • stories are editable and deletable as soon as there are published.
  • long-term vision centered on the preservation of stories.

Freefootstories the Wiki Way

The third version of freefootstories marks a new era. Prior versions of freefootstories were painful to update and maintain. You needed to submit your stories through email and they were then published on the website. This process had the following drawbacks:
  • painful submission: sending stories through email is long and may discourage some users.
  • lost of stories: stories sent through email may get caught in spam filters or bounce.
  • static stories: once published, stories were editable by administrators only.
  • poor publishing software: content management software not adapted to serve the need of a website like freefootstories.
In response to these deficiencies, freefootstories has adopted the wiki philosophy. You certainly know wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia where everyone is able to bring his own contributions. Freefootstories noticeably shares the same principles: everyone is invited to add, modify and delete stories without any login nor administrator privileges. This gives freefootstories a greater dynamism and aims the perpetual improvement of the reader's experience.

From now on, new scenarios are possible, for instance:
  • A recently published story contains typos. A reader decides to correct these errors while resuming his reading.
  • A French user publishes a story in English. An English reader decides to correct some expressions that are incorrect.
  • Despite not having a story to share, a user decides to spend some time formatting and correcting stories.
  • Following the publication of a story which is totally unrelated to foot fetishism, a user decides to delete the story.

Adding a Story

Adding a story to freefootstories is quick and easy. To add a story to freefootstories, click the 'add a story' link in the menu at the top.

Step 1: The requirements

The first step tells you how the process of adding a story to freefootstories will take place. Besides reading the message, there is nothing special to do at this point in time. Please be aware that the language of the story you are submitting must be the same language that is displayed on the screen. In other words, if you submit a story in English, you must be in the English section of freefootstories. If you want to publish a story in another language, you must first click that language in the menu at the top and then click 'add a story' again.

When you are done reading the first step, resume your submission by pressing the 'next' button.

Step 2: The story

The second step is to enter your story. You can type your story in the textbox that appears on the screen.

For security reasons and to prevent spam, your story cannot contain html or php tags. Moreover, you cannot insert an email adress, an IP address or a domain name. The main topic of your story must be about crushing, trampling or foot smelling. Stories that will not abide by these rules will be deleted.

You cannot submit images or other documents with your story. If your story is saved in a text or 'Word' document, please copy and paste it in the textbox.

Your story must be under 10 megabytes. This roughly means 10 millions characters. This is way enough space for a very large story. If you happen to have a gigantic story, you can break it into parts. You can also contact me for a special arrangement. At this point in time, freefootstories does not have a story approching 10 megabytes.

Once you story is entered in the textbox, click the 'next' button to resume your submission. If your story contains forbidden elements, freefootstories will display error messages in red. You will need to remove those elements to resume your submission.

I strongly suggest you to write your story in an editor like 'Notepad' or 'Word', to regularly save it and finally to copy and paste it in the textbox. Writing a story is a long-term process. If you write your story in the textbox and your browser or operating system hangs, all your work will be lost and you will need to start from scratch.

Step 3: The Title

The third step asks you to give a title to your story. The title of your story must be meaningful. (see Meaningful Titles)

In keeping with the story, the title must not contain html, php, an email address, an IP address or a domain name.

This step is mandatory. Freefootstories will not let you resume your submission if you do not provide a valid title.

To resume the submission of your story, click on the 'next' link.

Step 4: Your email address

The step four enables you to submit your email address. Giving your email address enables readers the opportunity to contact you.

If you submit your email address, it will not be displayed anywhere on the freefootstories website. It will be kept private. Users wishing to contact you will need to use a form to send you a message. Your email address will be known only if you reply to a user.

This step is optionnal. You do not have to provide an email address.

Freefootstories now has your story and your title. If you wish, you can submit your story without completing the remaining steps. Those steps can be fulfilled at a later time.

To show a preview of your story, click the 'preview' button.

To submit your storty, click the 'finish' button.

To go to the following step, click the 'next' button.

Step 5: The Summary

The step 5 enables you to provide a summary for your story. A summary is a sentence that describes the main events of your story. To learn on how to write a summary see, Meaningful Summaries.

Your summary must not contain html, php, an email address, an IP address nor a domain name.

Giving a summary to your story is optional. You do not need to write a summary to submit your story.

To show a preview of your story, click the 'preview' button.

To submit your storty, click the 'finish' button.

To go to the following step, click the 'next' button.

Step 6: The Categories

The step six enables you to provide categories to your story. To add a category to your story, select this category on the left and press the 'add' button. Add all the categories that apply to your story. To remove a category from your story, select this category on the right and press the 'remove' button.

Please note that you must not add categories that are not related to your story. Adding categories that are not related to your story is considered as spam. (see Vandalism on freefootstories)

Adding categories to your story is optional. You do not need to add categories to submit your story.

To show a preview of your story, click the 'preview' button.

To submit your storty, click the 'finish' button.

To go to the following step, click the 'next' button.

Step 7: Tags

The step seven enables you to provide tags to your story. Tags are words that describes the main content of your story and that are the most likely to be entered by a user in a search engine.

To learn more about tags, see Tags.

Your tags must not contain html, php, an email address, an IP address nor a domain name.

Assigning tags to your story is optional. You do not need to write tags to submit your story.

To show a preview of your story, click the 'preview' button.

To submit your storty, click the 'finish' button.

To go to the following step, click the 'next' button.

Step 8: The Preview

The step eight shows a preview of your story.

To correct data, press de 'previous' button.

Final Step: The Verification Code

The last step asks you to provide the verification code. This code helps freefootstories preventing spam by ensuring that you are a human and not a spambot.

Once the code correctly entered, your story is instantly published on freefootstories.

You can see how many persons have read a story. To read the statistics of a story, click the 'stats' link in the right menu.

The page displays how many persons have read the story for each day.

These statistics are based on users' IP address. A user who reads a story more than once through the day will be counted only once, given that he keeps the same IP addresss for the whole day. The next day, if he reads again the same story, he will be counted one more time because this is a new day. These statistics are on a per-day basis.

Printing a Story

To print a story, click the 'printer friendly' link in the right menu. Using the printer friendly feature enables you to print a story without the menus. Freefootstories will only display the title, the summary if available and the story text.

Translations on freefootstories

Freefootstories is a multilingual website. At this point in time, it is available in English, German, Spanish, Italian and French.

There are two distinct parts regarding the translations on freefootstories. First, there is the translation of stories and then, the translation of the freefootstories website.

Translation of Stories

After you post a story, it is automatically translated in the other four languages. This translation is done by the google translation engine a few minutes following your submission. While the result is far from perfect, this process avoids the need to manually copy and paste stories by hand each time you are reading a language that you do not understand.

When reading a story, you may occasionally see the tag [automatically translated]. This tag indicates that you are currently reading a story that has been translated by the google engine. Some stories will even contain two of these tags. This means that the story has been translated twice by the google engine.

Some stories need to be translated twice because the google engine does not support direct translations between the original and target language. For instance, at this point in time, the google translation engine cannot translate from French to Italian. It must first translate from French to English, then English to Italian. You can imagine a less-than-perfect result. However, this is way better than having to do this process by hand for each story.

Translating a Story by Hand

Although every story is automatically translated, you can decide to tanslate one by hand.

To change the translation of a story, go to the target language of this story. You can then change the title, the summary, the tags and the text of the story. Once your translation is over, please remove the tag [automatically translated] from the text of the story. This will indicate that the translation has been done by a human.

When translating a story, you may find that you cannot translate the whole story at once because of time constraints or other reasons. When you do not translate a story in its entirety at once, this is called a partial translation. When you do a partial translation, please move the tag [automatically translated] before the part of the story that has not yet been translated by a human. This will indicate to the other users where you stopped your work and where they can begin theirs.

Translating the Website of freefootstories

All the text that appears on freefootstories is translatable. The menus, the categories and errors message are all elements that can be translated. These elements are known as the structure of freefootstories. Unlike the stories, the structure of freefootstories is not automatically translated. It must be done by hand.

The original language of the structure of freefootstories is English. Therefore, expressions that are not yet translated in the German, Spanish, Italian and French sections will appear in English with a star (*) at the end. This indicates that the expression has not yet been translated.

I am able to do the English and French sections of freefootstories. However, the German, Spanish and Italian sections must be done by you. If you are a speaker of German, Spanish or Italian, get your brain at work so that your fellow readers can enjoy freefootstories in their own language.

How to Translate the Structure of freefootstories

To translate the structure of freefootstories, click the 'translations' link in the menu at the top. A page appears showing all the elements forming the structure of freefootstories. If you are in the English section of freefootstories, you will notice that there is nothing to translate, the reason being that this is the original language of the website.

If you are in the German, Spanish, Italian or French section while clicking on the 'translations' link, the page will display all the expressions with their translated counterparts. The expressions that appear with a blank textbox are expressions that have not yet been translated. These expressions, when present, appear at the top of the page. If no expression needs a translation, you only see the translated ones.

To translate expressions that are yet to be translated, write their equivalent in the textbox at the right. You must write in the same language that the section you are in. If you are in the German section, you must write the German translations of the English expressions displayed on the screen.

You can translate one or more expressions at a time. Once you are satisfied with your translations, make sure to enter the verification code at the top of the page. The verification code ensures that you are not a spambot.

Once the verification code entered correctly, press one of the 'save' buttons. The 'save' buttons appear at regular intervals. They all serve the same purpose. You do not need to press the 'save' button each time you translate a block of expressions. You can translate as many as you want before pressing one.

Hard-to-Translate Expressions

There may be times when some expressions are hard to translate because you need the context. Knowing where exactly they appear on freefootstories is helpful in this case. While there is no way to actually know where the expressions appear on freefootstories for to technical reasons, there is a tool that can help you to overcome this problem.

To use this tool, click on the 'preferences' link at the top of the page. Check the 'activate translation help' option. Then, click the 'save' button. From now on, each expression on freefootstories will appear with a word withing square brackets ([]) at its right side. This word, unique for each expression, is the identification key of the expression.

To use this key, click on the 'translations' link in the top menu. The translation page will now display the identification key along with the expression in English of all expressions. When browsing freefootstories, note the identification key of the expression you wish to modify and search for it within the translation page. That way you will be able to translate expressions within their context.

This is not a perfect process and it will be improved over time with the help of your comments.

Meaningful Titles

Each story on freefootstories must have a title. It is not possible to post a story without a proper title. Moreover, it is not possible to erase the title of a story. A title may only be modified.

The title of a story must be meaningful. A meaningful title gives a personality to a story or is a good revealer of the content. A meaninful title may contain a proper noun from a person or a location. For instance, a story titled 'Trampled by Julie' is a meaningful title containing a proper noun. It is meaningful because probabilities are low that dozens of stories contain someone getting trampled by a girl whose name is Julie.

Failing to have a proper noun, a meaningful title must be a good revealer of the content of the story. A title is a good revealer of the content if it answers at least two of the following questions: where? when? how? why? what? For example, a story titled 'Snail Crushed at School' is a meaningful title because it answers the what and the where.

Remember that a title must be original in order to distinguish a story from the hundreds available on freefootstories.

Meaningful Summaries

Stories on freefootstories can have a summary. While not required, making a summary is strongly suggested in order to improve users' reading experience.

Summaries on freefootstories must be brief and indicative of the main topics of the story. They must be made of one sentence only. Moreover, they must be meaningful. A summary is said to be meaningful if it answers at least three of the following questions: where? when? how? why? what? For instance, a summary written that way: 'A man places snails in the school where he works to get female students to step on them' is a meaninful summary. It answsers the what, where, how and why in one sentence.

When you are finished reading a story having no summary, please help freefootstories and write a meaningful summary. Future readers will be grateful.

Tags

Stories on freefootstories may contain tags. While not required, assigning tags to a story is strongly suggested to improve the odds of finding the story through a search engine.

Tags are words that are likely to be typed in a search engine by a reader seeking the story. For instance, if you write a story describing how you managed to smell your cousin's feet, you could write the following tags: 'foot smelling female cousin barefoot'.

At this point in time, there is no official list of tags. Use common sense and check what others have written before you. This will give you ideas about the tags that are usually used.

When you are finished reading a story with no tags, please help freefootstories by providing of tags. Future readers will be grateful.

Latest Changes

Sometimes you may wonder which stories have been mofified lately, which titles have been improved or which stories have been deleted. To know the latest changes on freefootstories, click the 'latest changes' link in the menu at the top.

The 'latest changes' page displays the most recent modifications that occured on freefootstories in the current language. If you are in the French section of freefootstories, only changes affecting the French content are shown.

To see the changes made in another language, click that language first in the menu and then click 'latest changes'. By default, this page will display the latest changes that occured since the last week.

You can narrow your search by selecting the dropdown box where 'all elements' is displayed. The elements that you can select are:
  • the translations: the translations of all the expressions on freefootstories.
  • the comments: the comments posted by readers.
  • the stories: the stories posted on freefootstories.
  • the story titles: the title of the stories.
  • the summaries: the summaries of the stories.
  • the tags: the tags assigned to stories.
  • input titles: the title assigned to inputs.
  • input questions: the questions asked for each input.
  • the input replies: the replies posted to an input question.
  • the bans: the bans on IP addresses.
Searches done on this page output the results in descending chronologic order, from the newest to the oldest.

Each modification shows a part the IP address of the user who did it. The full IP address is kept private for security reasons. An hidden IP address shows 'x' instead of numbers. An IP is revealed when a user is banned from freefootstories. (see Banned Users on freefootstories)

Viewing the Latest Modifications Done by a User

To view the latest modifications done a particular user to freefootstories, click on the 'latest changes' in the top menu. The list of the latest changes appears. Click on the user's IP address you wish to check.

A page titled 'latest changes by IP address [...] appears. This page shows the latest changes done by the said IP address.

A brief technical explanation is necessary. When you connect to the internet, either by phone, DSL or cable modem, your internet service provider assignes you an IP address. This IP address may either be static or dynamic. A static IP address does not change over time. It does not matter how many times you disconnect and reconnect. You are always assigned the same IP address.

A dynamic IP address is changed over time, either when disconnecting and reconnecting or at a set time interval. Since freefootstories does not ask for a login, it recognizes users by their IP address, either dynamic or static.

A user's IP address may change during the day. Freefootstories makes it easy to deal with that issue by displaying the user's latest modifications in three parts.

The first part shows the changes that were done by the strict IP address. This means that if a user has the IP address 64.15.101.101, only the changes done by this IP address are shown.

The second part shows the changes done by all the IP addresses beginning with the first 3 numbers of the user's IP address. If the user has an IP address of 64.15.101.101, freefootstories will show all the changes done by users having an IP address starting by 64.15.101.

The third part shows the changes done by all the IP addresses beginning by the first two numbers of the user's IP address. In our example, this would be all the IP addresses beginning by 64.15.

Freefootstories does not display the changes done by the users having an IP address starting with the fist number since this would give a too large resultset.

Be aware that common sense must be used when reading this page to see the latest changes done by a user. Keep in mind that several different persons may have shared a common IP address over a period of time if this IP address was dynamic. Usually, this page is used to see the latest changes of a user in the recent past. Going a year back with a particular IP address may yield to incorrect conclusions.

Inputs on freefootstories

Freefootstories features inputs. Inputs are monthly topics that readers are invited to answer. At this point in time, inputs are done by me. However, you can suggest inputs in the freefootstories forum or by sending them to by email.

Vandalism on freefootstories

Freefootstories is an open website where everyone is invited to participate without loging in. While this is handy, this opens the door to malicious users. A user who deteriorates freefootstories is said to be doing vandalism.

Vandalism may be one of the following:

  • introducing vulgar words in an editable element.
  • removing essential words from an editable element.
  • deleting a story without a proper explanation.
  • deleting a comment without a valid reason.
  • adding irrelevant categories to a story.
  • removing relevant categories from a story.
  • adding irrelevant tags to a story.
  • removing relevant tags from a story.
  • other forms of vandalism.

Fighting Vandalism

Freefootstories as been designed to handle various forms of vandalism. First, freefootstories will not let a user post an email address, an IP address or a domain name in an editable element. This restriction discourages spammers looking to promote a product or website.

Secondly, freefootstories requires a certain time to elapse between modifications. At this point in time, a user must wait 30 seconds between each modifications done on freefootstories. This restraint is there to discourage spiteful users from doing mass vandalism in a short period of time.

Thirdly, freefootstories requires a verificaion code each time you do a modification. This verification code is a four letter code that help freefootstories determining if a user is either a human or a spambot.

Fourthly, freefootstories provides an easy-to-use tool to compare the different versions of editable elements.

Finally, as an administrator, I can ban users who, obviously, are not here to make freefootstories grow in an appropriate way.

Banned Users on freefootstories

A user doing vandalism in a repetitive fashion may be banned. When banned, a user cannot access freefootstories for an amount of time proportional to the offence. When a banned user goes to the freefootstories website, a message warns him that his access is forbidden. The reason for his denial follows this message.

The duration of a ban is variable. For a small offence, the user may be banned for a day. Profesionnal spammers are banned for a lifetime period on the first offence. No warning is provided.

Freefootstories can automatically ban a user who gives too many erroneous verification codes within a set time frame. This prevents spambots from trying to discover verification codes in a repetitive fashion.

Comments on freefootstories

There are two types of comments on freefootstories: comments on your modifications and comments on others' modifications.

Comments on your own modifications are essential on freefootstories. When you modify an editable element, you must provide the reason for which you are changing this element. This enables other users to quickly see what has been modified.

Comments on freefootstrories must be brief and precise. If you correct typos, your comment can be 'typos'. You do not need to point out all the typos that you fixed. Freefootstories has a tool to see the latest changes in a story. Should a user wish to view your modifications, he will use that tool.

To view what kind of comments are posted for the modification, visit the freefootstories website and look at what others have written.

Comments on freefootstories are also used to detect vandalism. When a malicious user is doing vandalism on freefootstories, comments about his modifications may sound weird or be outright false. A comment that does not match the modifications is a sure sign of something fishy behind the scenes.

You can comment others' modifications on freefootstories. To comment a user's modification, click the 'comments' link in the history.

Once your comment is posted, it can be edited or deleted by anyone. You will usually edit your own comments for spelling mistakes. You must have a valid reason to delete the comment of another user. This reason will usually because it is spam.
